The stories below, are to the best of our recollection, true stories. The names of the innocent may, or may not have been changed to protect some people. But hopefully, you will get a taste of our life aboard the ship that we called home, The USS Alamo.
Occasionally, when underway during hot days in the Pacific, the Captain would authorize "Swim time." The Alamo, capable of "ballasting down" would then flood the welldeck that usually carried amphibious landing craft, and sailors would have some fun time splashing, swimming, and have a great time.
This was the main purpose of the USS Alamo, to transport troops and equipment to support an "Amphibious Landing". The Alamo would get as close to the shoreline as safely possible and then discharge Marines or Army troops in landing crafts or amphibious vehicles.
